Abstract

The chloroform extract of the matured seeds of Swietenia macroplrylla afforded swietenolide. Its structure was elucidated by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and confmned by acetylation. Swietenolide and its acetylated derivatives were found to inhibit the growth of T. mentagrophytes. Swietenolide was inactive against E. coli, S. aureus and C. albicans.
