A low-cost calorimeter for the determination of heat of combustion of low molecular weight compounds was assembled using easily available materials. A thermistor was employed for the measurement of the temperature change accompanying the combustion reaction. The assembled calorimeter give satisfactory results for the low molecular weight alcohols and hydrocarbons, with errors not exceeding 5%.Downloads
