Abstract

Preliminary studies done on the methanol extract of Terminalia chebula Retzius (Combretaceae), or kashi in Japanese, showed that it has a high potential for inhibiting the growth of P388/ADM leukemia cells. Further separation of the methanol extract using solvent systems of different polarity resulted in the isolation and identification of several compounds of which two are of significance: β-D-glucopyranosyl 2α,3β,19α,23-tetrahydroxyolean-12-en-28-oate (arjunglucoside I) and 2α,3β,19α,23-tetrahydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (arjungenin). Arjunglucoside I showed 20.1% growth inhibition of P388/ADM leukemia cells at a concentration of 100 µg/mL while arjungenin showed 78.3% growth inhibition at the same concentration. These two compounds have been previously isolated from other Terminalia species but it is the first time to be isolated from kashi and the first time for the bioactivity to be reported.
