The alkane-α,ω-diyl bis(O,O-dialkylphosphonate)s, which are easily accessible by synthesis, have been used in solvent extraction studies of rare-earth metal ions. The important role played by structural modifications of the bis(dialkylphosphonate) molecule is shown by the differences in the samarium extractabilities. The alkane-α,ω-diyl bis( dialkylphosphonate) ligands dissolved in nitrobenzene appear to have promising efficiency for the extraction of samarium with picrate ion and in nitrate medium, forming an extractable complex composition of Sm(III):Pic:NO3-:L = 1:1:2:2. At these conditions, the extraction ability of the ligands are higher than tributyl phosphate (TBP), a known organophosphate extractant for lanthanides. A two-time cross-current contact quantitative back-extraction process from the organic phase is possible with 0.5M HCI. Results of the extraction studies will find application in the extraction, separation, enrichment and determination of lanthanides, specifically on samarium.Downloads
